Uses of Methyl Isobutyl Ketone (MIBK)

Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) is a semi-finished product of pindone.

MIBK solvent is used as medicine and dye intermediates. Pesticides produced with o-chlorobenzaldehyde can control aphids on dry crops and fruit trees. The o-chlorobenzaldehyde oximation can obtain o-chlorobenzyl hydrazine, and further chlorination can obtain o-chlorobenzyl hydrazine, both of which are drug intermediates.

It can serve as solvents for nitrocellulose, resins, and gums and extractant of inorganic salts.
It can be used as a standard material of chromatographic analysis, a solvent, and an extractant.
It can be used as a solvent and a dewaxing agent for lubricating oils.
It is mainly used to make rum, cheese and fruit flavors.

MIBK chemical is an excellent medium boiling point solvent. It is used as a beneficiation agent, a solvent for dewaxing of oil products, a coupler for color film, also used as the solvent for tetracycline and pyrethroids and DDT, adhesives, rubber glues, aircraft, and model mulch paints. It is an effective separating agent for some inorganic salts and is used as an anticoagulant and thinner for vinyl resins.

Hazardous characteristics: Its vapor with air form an explosive mixture, which can cause a combustion explosion in the event of an open flame or high heat energy. It can react with oxidants. Its vapor is heavier than air, and it can spread to quite a place in the lower part of the city. The encounter of an open flame will lead to a fire. In case of high heat, the internal pressure of the container increases, causing cracking and explosion. MIBK solvent is a flammable chemical and dissolves some plastics, resins, and rubber.

Storage and transportation precautions of MIBK chemical

MIBK chemical should be stored in a cool, ventilated room and be kept away from fire and heat sources. The storage temperature should not exceed 30 °C. Direct sunlight should be prevented and the container should be sealed. It should be stored separately from oxidants. The lighting, ventilation and other facilities in the storage room should be explosion-proof. For tank storage, there must be measures in case of fire and explosion. Do not use mechanical equipment and tools that are prone to generate sparks. It should be lightly loaded and unloaded to avoid damages to the packaging and containers.
